Description

This video is part of "Sarah Chen's Career Obstacles" series. For the full series, see podcast: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9IsBEU6SHCNT_TH_Cv0wYWZH-pZSMVoh

“Spring Flowers Blooming" is the 4th reincarnation of Sarah Chen's signature early song, "Water Wagon Girl." The first three renditions were recorded when Chen was 9 to 12 years of age. Chen was 18 and just turned pro. Despite her beautiful vocals and a Teresa Teng style, the song left no traces. This video explains Sarah Chen's early struggles in the giant shadow of Teresa Teng.

Teresa Teng was born in January 1953, and Sarah Chen in May 1958. Although five-years apart, they both released their debut songs in 1967. At that time, Teresa Teng was 14 and started her professional career, releasing over 200 songs between 14 and 18. Meanwhile, Sarah Chen, at just 9, began her career with "Water Wagon Girl," starting slowly at a snail's pace. By the early 1980s, when Chen's career truly took off, Teng was at her best, and not long after, Teng entered the later stage of her career. This created the impression that the two singers were at least a decade apart. But in reality, they were almost contemporaries.

Despite their attempts to stay out of each other's way, Sarah Chen and Teresa Teng performed nearly 20 songs in common. The sweetness of the young Sarah Chen sounds a bit like Teresa Teng, while the soothing voice of the older Teresa Teng sounds a bit like Sarah Chen.

When Sarah Chen turned pro at 18, Teresa Teng had dominated the Asian language markets. Chen could not lower her vocals to become Anita Mui or Tsai Chin, nor could she gain Teresa Teng's years of experience overnight. Big Ocean Records tried to solve her problem by instilling Teresa Teng's flavor into Sarah Chen's early albums, setting her up for failure. Chen's 1977 album, "Quietly saying good-bye," is the most Teresa Teng-like of all Sarah Chen's albums. Unsurprisingly, the entire album sank into obscurity. But the early assimilation with Teng was important, and perhaps necessary, for Sarah Chen's later differentiation from Teresa Teng.

The best decision Sarah Chen later made with Haishan Records was ditching traces of Teresa Teng. No longer artificially sweet or chirpy, she let her naturally jade-like voice shine, telling stories her way. It took her 10 years, 100 songs, and over 10,000 hours to finally step out of Teng's shadow. It wasn’t Sarah Chen’s success, but her courage to try new things and accept failure, that set her apart and made her the diva of Mandopop divas.
