Description
It seems that for a composer, writing an Ave Maria is much like a philosopher publishing a small treatise on ethics or ontology. Ave Maria has been written by Josquin des Prez, Palestrina, Morales, Gounod, Schubert, Saint-Saëns, and many others.
Their music was written for the voice; I decided, however, to follow the line of Mendelssohn.
This Song Without Words was not written by someone who sincerely believes in God, but rather by someone who simply possesses the capacity to believe and to love. Without love, there can be no music at all.
One musician I know criticized this piece, advising me to study how Bach wrote his vocal music. But why should I write like Bach, if the music in my head insists on sounding the way it wants to?
I present to you an Ave Maria for oboe and string orchestra.
