My performance of Scott Joplin’s “Bethena, a Concert Waltz.”

Written in 1905, this was Joplin’s first work after the death of his wife, Freddie. She died of pneumonia only 10 weeks after their wedding. While sources do not know the origin of the name “Bethena,” I am led to believe that this song was written in memoriam of Joplin’s relationship with Freddie.

The piece traverses through 5 unique key signatures in several different sections, each of which is crafted around a simple melodic motif (played in the introduction). Each section has a unique personality with rich, melancholic harmonies that allow for deep emotional expression.

I think of each section as Joplin’s remembrance of a certain phase in his relationship with Freddie — each section (or memory) contains high highs and low lows, as do all relationships. As for the dramatic and troubling transitions in between sections, I feel as if these are a reflection of Joplin’s emotional struggles as he coped with the death of his wife. Along with each fond memory came the stark reminder that life must go on…
