Bobby (Boris) Pickett – Monster Mash …1962
Here’s wishing everyone a safe and ghoulishly good Halloween!
Robert George Pickett, also known as Bobby "Boris" Pickett, was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and comedian known for co-writing and performing the 1962 hit novelty song Monster Mash at the age of 24. Pickett watched many horror films in his youth as a result of his father's position as a local movie theater manager. At a young age, he started doing impressions of Hollywood film stars, which included horror move stars Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Pickett co-wrote his signature song, "Monster Mash", with Leonard Capizzi in May 1962 as a spoof of popular contemporary dance crazes. Although major labels declined to distribute the song, Gary S. Paxton finally agreed to release it across the United States on his Garpax record label. “Monster Mash” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of Sept. 8, 1962. Six weeks later, the single knocked the Four Seasons’ “Sherry” from the top spot to begin a two-week reign at the #1 position that ended four days before Halloween.
