‘Hanohano Helumoa’ (the song for Pauahi) had a really good feel from the start. There is so much history at Helumoa, Waikīkī, with specific stories that take us back as far as the late 15th century,” Boyd told Ka Wai Ola Loa. “Pauahi’s finishing her will at Helumoa months before her passing in 1884 is such a poignant story. Along with her husband Charles Reed Bishop, Pauahi made the decision while at Helumoa to establish her permanent legacy, Kamehameha Schools. The music and lyrics were written in an older style allowing the listener to imagine Waikïkï with more kumu niu (coconut trees) and less concrete.”
