Description
This is a screen-capture video from a TuneLing for "Heart Of Stone" from the album "Beautifully Broken", by Jelly Roll.
This song is also available in a separate TuneLing video for guitar!
Notes:
Here's another cut from the big guy, with the bigger voice. This one is actually pretty easy, even for newer players, and as usual, there's a thing or two to learn from it.
It's based on a single four-chord pattern that is repeated throughout, with almost no changes. So why doesn't it sound boring??? Well, there are a few reasons...
1) Silence: there are few places where silence is deployed for dramatic effect. Specifically, the third and fourth beats of bars 13, 25, 41 and 73. And the very last bar is completely silent, except for Jelly's voice.
2) Dynamics: the third chorus gets suddenly quiet (and you should too), and eventually it builds back up to the anthemic finish we expect.
3) Jelly himself: the man has a knack for dramatic, emotional performances, and he could keep it lively even if there was a single chord instead of four.
So would-be songwriters and producers, the lesson for you here is that when you have these other elements in place, no one will notice that your song has only one repetitive chord pattern.
ENJOY!
