Hi there! I'm Tomoko Abe, Toronto based jazz vocalist. In order to improve my general improvisation skill, I have started working on transcribing a jazz giants' great performances.
This time I transcribed Michael Mayo’s solo of “Altitude feat. Joel Ross & Michael Mayo” from Nate Smith’s Album “Kinfolk 2: See the Birds” (that is available on Bandcamp! https://waterbabymusic.bandcamp.com/album/kinfolk-2-see-the-birds ). I was recommended to listen to this song from one of my respectable friends & amazing trombone player: Nick Marshal who is now living and performing actively in Japan. I immediately loved this track and bought that album (such a great album!!). I believe this song’s meter is 3 + 5, and I thought that would be a great chance to work on improvising over an odd meter. In fact, it turned into a beneficial learning experience, because Michael Mayo’s articulation and intonation are so beautiful and clear, and those are what I want to improve as well!
