Description

Album Version.

Internationally popular number recorded by then 29 year old U.K. based vocalist whose birth name was ‘Graham Pulleyblank’.

A big seller in Australia, it peaked at the #2 spot in the Go-Set pop newspaper’s top 40 chart (the only music listing then compiled on a national basis) on 13 November 1968 and, years later, was retrospectively deemed to be the 7th most successful 45 single release of that year.

However, this wasn’t the only rendition of the country flavoured pop song issued in Australia in 1968, as ‘Astor Records’ marketed an alternative up tempo recording by the Irish showband, ‘The Dixies’ (incorrectly attributed by Go-Set as the ‘Dixie Belles’) that picked up some local pop radio airplay and peaked at the #35 national position. An extracted audio remix of that particular track is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpnGmzUNLcw

This is the original (2.42) version included on Leapy’s 1968 ‘stereophonic’ LP, ‘Little Arrows’ (any vinyl album buyers of the time hoping for a balanced stereo mix on that release were to be sorely disappointed as ‘Decca’ engineers had merely panned the singer’s vocals in the left channel with all accompaniment firmly pushed into the right).

The label on the Australian mono mixed 45 single was printed with a longer (2.55) running time.

Australia release: Late 1968
