This song was written over one weekend in 1973 by Jerry Liliedahl and Jack Smith for the Leo Burnett advertising agency who represented United Airlines. The previous year United used Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land," but the Guthrie estate asked so much money to continue its use, the Burnett agency decided to use a new song. Mother Country was voted as The American Association of Advertising Agencies' "Song of the Year" for 1973.
This song was used by United Airlines in a number of their main advertising campaigns for more than two decades (with a revamped version introduced in the early 1980s). The version used in United Airlines' promotional films and commercials omits the song's bridge and the lyrics at the end of the chorus are changed from "Sweet Mother Country, She's Your Land and Mine..." to "The Friendly Skies of Your Land, United Air Lines..."
