The erhu music instrument probably evolved from the xiqin instrument, which was brought to China by Mongol invaders during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In earlier times, the erhu's soundboard was smaller, the spike was curved, the tuning pegs were made of wood, and the strings were made of silk.
