The Story Behind The Hymn, Without Him.
Perhaps you remember singing the hymn "Without Him" (I would be nothing) growing up in church or you have heard it on the classic, 'How Great Thou Art' Triple Platinum album by Elvis Presley?
The journey behind this hymn's road to popularity began in Memphis, TN in 1960's at a singing convention.
Fifteen minutes before the Gospel singing group, the LeFevres were to perform on stage, a young man in an army suit had arrived. He was dirty and unshaven.
A few days prior, this young son Mylon LeFevre, secured a three-day pass from his sergeant, to set off traveling over 500 miles from Fort Jackson, South Carolina to Memphis. He hitched rides and hiked all night and the following day. His family wanted him to join them in the convention.
At the sight of her son's arrival, Mrs. LeFevre introduced him to the audience.
“My son has written a song, and I want you to hear it,” she said. By the way, this was the first song Mylon LeFevre had written at the age of 17 years old.
So he went onto the stage and sang the song that his mother loved.
In that same convention, a booth contained Elvis Presley with his fiancée, Priscilla. They heard the song and watched the young man's performance. After the concert, Presley invited him into their booth.
Elvis Presley soon recorded the young songwriter’s song and included it on his ‘How Great Thou Art‘ album.
By the end of the year first, over a hundred artists recorded “Without Him” as well as the young LeFevre’s other compositions.
And that is the story behind the hymn, "Without Him".
