ARGAÑARAZ

Tiempos viejos y compadres
De mi vida cadenera,
Que ya no volverán
Mis años a gozar.
¿Qué habrá sido de esa barra
bravucona y trencillera,
que tanto dio que hablar
por su guapear?

Adiós, amigos de entonces,
Ya estamos viejos de tanto andar.

Marcando una candombeada
Fue luciendo medias lunas,
Y entre cortes y quebradas
Iba el tango provocador...
Me acuerdo de aquellas farras
Que entre fuelles dormilones,
Rimaban los corazones
Un paisaje sentimental.

Siglo de oro, de ese tiempo
En que el ñato Monteagudo,
Borracho de pernod
Se quiso suicidar.
Y del loco Puentecito
Y del viejito Rozano...
No los he vuelto a ver
¿Dónde andarán?...

THOSE BOYS’ NIGHTS OUT

Old times and good pals
Of my wild youth,
My years to enjoy
That will never come back.
What has become of that gang,
Shooting off their mouths and picking fights,
That caused so much talk
Through its bravado?

Farewell, friends of back then
We’re already old from all that.

Making a candombeada*
He was wearing crescents,
And amid the cortes and quebradas
Went the tango raising hell...
I remember those boozy nights
Between the sleepy bandoneons,
And a romantic verse
Hearts were in synch’.

Those years of that Golden Age
When the flat-nosed Monteagudo,
Drunk on Pernod
Wanted to kill himself.
And the crazy Puentecito
And the old guy Rozano ...
I have not seen them of late
Where have they all gone? ...

*candombeada – candombé, a dance, evolved from the rhythmic dance styles of African slaves to music that heavily features drums and other percussion. The national dance of Uruguay, Candombé is celebrated in carnivals called llamadas, similar to that of Rio de Janeiro. At these, the highly colourful and raucous processions carry symbols such as stars, crescents and half-moons, echoing historical African nature worship. With thanks to eminent translator, tango lyric de-coder, and Today’s Tango Is… member, Michael Krugman, and his informant, Lucia Figueroa, for their explanation regarding the symbols, which would otherwise have eluded me.
