Sister Rosetta Tharpe was so much more than just a great gospel singer: Her fierce guitar playing earned her the title "Godmother Of Rock'n'Roll". And her shredding live performance of this song on the show "TV Gospel Time" from the mid-60s is ample proof of what a powerful guitar slinger she was capable to be in her later years (the stunning guitar solo from that appearance was also used to great effect in the French movie "Amelie" from 2001).

This is the original version of "Up Above My Head" - a vocal duet with her very good friend Marie Knight, backed up by the trusty Sam Price Trio. It was recorded on November 24, 1947 in New York. I hope you enjoy!
