Description

This historical ballad tells the story of Kusunoki Masatsura, the son of the legendary Kusunoki Masashige, and his final journey during the waning years of the Nanbokuchō period. Years after his father’s heroic fall at Minatogawa, Masatsura pledges his loyalty to the young Emperor Go-Murakami, hoping to uphold the ideals his father died for.

He recalls his father's triumph at Chihaya and leads his own victorious campaign at Sakai-no-ura, but as the tides shift, he finds himself hopelessly outnumbered. With only three thousand warriors facing an army of eighty thousand, Masatsura prepares for battle at Shijōnawate, knowing it will be his last.


The illustration depicts Masatsura paying his respects at Masashige’s grave in Kawachi Province, shortly after his return from Sakai-no-ura in 1347.
