“If gratitude is due from man to man, how much more from man to his Maker”- Joseph Addison
Born in 1672, Joseph Addison was one of England’s greatest writers in the 18th century. Wanting to follow his father’s footsteps as a clergyman but soon discovered that his passion lay in the literary world. He and his friend, Richard Steele, would later found a daily newspaper called The Spectator. They were determined to give it a higher moral tone than the other papers of the day.
This Hymn was initially a poem on “Gratitude”, which was first published in his newspaper on 9 August 1712. The original version of this poem has thirteen wonderful stanzas. Some of the lyrics of this poem-turned-hymn can be found in Psalm 103.
Before his death in 1719, he had a diverse career background. Asides being an essayist and poet, he was also a politician and playwright.
