Description
Here's the Town Theme from Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link from the original NES. Zelda 2 was a fairly wild at the time reimagining of the original LoZ as a 2D platformer. While in restrospect, gamers lament the abandoment of the bird's eye view gameplay of the original game in this sequel, I much more distinctly remember lamenting the unforgiving enemies that get in the way when you try and travel back to a palace that you died in because the palaces are also unforgiving. I didn't miss not having a boomerang as much as wish someone had figured out an easy way to beat those goddamn blue knights!
Anyway, I choose to do a cover of the town theme, partially because of the interesting bass line and lead melodies, but also because I wanted to track something quickly to continue experimenting with micing the drum kit with an extra microphone on the hihat. For this video, I took the level way down on the hihat to blend it more closely with the overhead mics. I think it's a bit more balanced in the mix than the last video, but let me know what you think in the comments.
The song is mostly in C major, but makes use of a G# and a Bb note in the bass line to create some extra tension before seguing away from the main, sleepy melody in the song. The lead melodies, in addition to creating harmonic dissonances commonly playing seventh intervals against each other, both smartly employ a G# in the same measure as the bass to setup that change away from the main theme.
Recording was generally identical to the last few NES videos, two guitar parts each double tracked, and played through the Fender Cybertwin mic'd up with an sm57. Bass direct in with plugins. Drums with usual microphone setup with the addition of a hihat mic.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the song with a slight tinge of remembering just how awful the Death Mountain section of the game is!
